Binge-Eating Disorder

What is it?

Binge-Eating disorder involves recurrent episodes of uncontrollable eating to the point of discomfort. This may look like eating a large quantity of food in a short period of time. There is often confusion between binge-eating and overindulging. Its important to know the difference: it is normal to 'overeat' past fullness occasionally, however bingeing occurs when you feel out of control and unable to stop, sometimes unaware of what you are doing. It is often accompanied or triggered by strong negative feelings before and after. Like any eating disorder, there is no 'look' or a certain weight for binge-eating. It is common in people of a higher BMI, but does also affect people who healthy and underweight.

Complications

As I stress in other pages, all eating disorders are serious and can be dangerous. Binge-eating disorder particularly damages the heart. It can lead to coronary heart-disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and joint problems. Short-term issues are bloating, dehydration, sore-throat, electrolyte imbalances, indigestion and stomach pain. Binge-eating disorder also greatly impacts your psychological health. Feelings of shame, guilt and embarrassment can be debilitating, and may cause you to isolate yourself. You are not alone in this, and you should not be ashamed. Binge-eating isn't a choice, but recovery is possible.
